Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I reach eighty-five pounds per hand with equal end loads and complete gaps no greater than five pounds?
Yes. Matching outer selections and both or neither internal micro weight provide a balanced ten- to eighty-five-pound ladder in five-pound steps.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the supported complete progression have gaps no greater than 2.5 pounds?
No. Even when the permitted single-micro choices are included, some consecutive gaps remain five pounds.
Explore this need in the finder →Can this same supplied pair offer exactly 12.5 pounds and later reach eighty-five pounds if I accept the permitted offset light setting?
Yes. One internal micro weight gives 12.5 pounds with slight imbalance; switching to the balanced arrangement also reaches the supplied eighty-five-pound maximum.
Explore this need in the finder →The 85 lb REP × PÉPIN FAST pair is the first step above the family’s newer 65 lb package. Its appeal is straightforward: eighty-five pounds per hand is supplied immediately, while the same system can accept further capacity later. The decision is less straightforward if you need very light weights, insist on one-motion five-pound changes, or plan to keep the pair on an angled rack.
Enough included weight for the exercise you choose
The current US configuration is DBS-7000-085, a pair of dumbbells with their cradles. Each dumbbell combines a ten-pound handle, fourteen five-pound outer plates and two internal 2.5 lb micro weights. The maximum is eighty-five pounds per hand, not eighty-five pounds divided between the two dumbbells. A stand, storage cart and later expansion plates are separate from this capacity choice.
Compare the supplied ceiling with the heaviest exercise in your actual routine. If sixty-five pounds already provides suitable headroom, the 65 lb FAST package uses the same basic selection system with fewer plates. If your rows already need ninety pounds, the eighty-five-pound box will require an upgrade before it covers that exercise. The 105 lb package addresses that need on delivery.
At the opposite end, the bare handle is ten pounds. Someone sharing the pair with a person who needs five pounds should account for a separate light pair or consider QuickDraw. More maximum weight does not compensate for a minimum that is too heavy for a particular exercise.
Five-pound progress depends on the internal weights
FAST uses magnetic pop-pins on the side rails. Set both main selectors to the same outer weight, then fully engage them before lifting. Matching outer selections changes total load in ten-pound increments. The two internal 2.5 lb weights fill the balanced intermediate settings, giving ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five and so on through eighty-five pounds. Reaching every five-pound setting therefore includes a micro-weight handling routine as well as selector movement.
A single internal weight is also allowed by REP, with an acknowledged small imbalance. It permits selections such as 12.5, 22.5 and 32.5 pounds. You may use those and return to a balanced eighty-five-pound selection on the same supplied pair. However, those offset settings do not fill every missing 2.5 lb point. For a program that requires equal end loads throughout, keep both internal weights in or both out as appropriate and plan around five-pound gaps.
Grip, cradle and setup deserve attention
REP’s factory drawing labels a 34 mm knurled grip and a 4.9-inch hand opening. That is useful information when comparing the 32 mm QuickDraw handle or a system with a more enclosed hand space. The FAST’s side rails and internal weights remain part of the layout around your hand. A preference for an entirely open conventional handle is a reason to examine the available space carefully before ordering.
Keep the cradles on a level, stable surface. REP explicitly specifies flat storage and operation, so a sloping rack intended for fixed dumbbells is unsuitable. The factory drawing’s 18.9-inch dimension belongs to the long cradle drawing, not an independently documented eighty-five-pound lifted-body length. Allow working space around the storage position rather than calculating a shelf from the dumbbell’s plate stack alone.
Assembly sets the cradle’s dovetail ends in the holes for this capacity. The manual asks you to align the assembly and check free movement before fully tightening. A stiff selector can indicate cradle alignment trouble; REP provides a specific troubleshooting procedure. Forcing a selector or skipping final engagement checks defeats the point of having visible controls.
What expansion and ownership involve
The current add-on pack contains eight five-pound outer plates, four for each dumbbell. One pack takes this pair to 105 pounds per hand; two take it to 125. The cradle expands by relocating its ends. This is a supported capacity upgrade, not a reason to mix original PÉPIN plates with the REP × PÉPIN system: the manufacturer says those original components are incompatible.
Check current REP service instructions when receiving older, used or uncertain stock. There are separate replacement instructions for the main handle selector knobs and the spring pins on the micro weights. The instructions tell service-kit recipients to replace the relevant parts before their next workout. Since the public sheets do not establish a complete serial-number boundary, ask REP to confirm the parts fitted to the pair you are buying. Ensure the selectors and micro-weight pins are secured, and follow the manual’s direction to avoid drops.
The eighty-five-pound pair makes sense when it covers today’s heavy work and you want a documented route to 125 without buying all the plates at once. It is a weaker fit when the central requirement is a five-pound start or a very fine balanced progression. For greater included capacity choose FAST 105; for a lighter starting range choose QuickDraw, with its lower pound ceiling clearly understood.
