A useful fit for

An open aluminum grip and handle-twist selection when the complete 80-pound range is needed now.

The main tradeoff

Five-pound gaps remain throughout; the S-series expansion is not a documented upgrade for this original-series endpoint.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I reach 80 pounds per hand with a five-pound starting selection and twisting-handle changes?

Yes. The complete original 580 supplies that range without relying on a future expansion.

Does the original 580 meet a current 90-pound-per-hand requirement?

No. The original-series endpoint is 80 lb. The separately specified S 5100 is a different model.

Is an exact 70-pound selection confirmed with matching end loads?

Yes. Seventy pounds appears in the official ladder, and the current manual checks equal plate pickup at both ends.

The NÜOBELL 580 supplies the full 5–80-pound range of NÜO's original-series pound model. It is sold as a pair through the manufacturer's current US store, with the cradles needed for selection. It makes sense when 50 pounds is already restrictive and a twist-handle system suits the way the pair will be used. The heavier ceiling does not add smaller gaps between the selections.

Understand the sixteen nominal loads

The factory lists five through 80 pounds in five-pound steps. Both the minimum and maximum are per dumbbell; the pair's combined maximum is not the weight available in one hand. The list provides an exact nominal 50, 70 and 80 pounds, but not the half steps between them. A shopper who depends on 12.5 pounds should choose another documented ladder instead of assuming a twist mechanism can stop between marked positions.

The manufacturer's stated load tolerance is up to five percent. That is relevant when comparing a nominal selection with a scale or a fixed weight from another maker. The practical benefit here is a repeatable marked range in one pair, rather than a promise of laboratory calibration or an assessment of the weight measured on a sample.

Allow space for the selection stations

The dumbbells return to their cradles for adjustments. Those locations should be stable, level and convenient to reach from the exercises you plan to perform. If the pair is shared, both users need to understand where the complete plate stacks remain and how the handles are seated. The unused plates are part of the station even when a light selection is lifted out.

NÜO lists a product envelope of 485 millimeters long, 185 high and 193 wide, without separately identifying the bare loaded assembly and the cradle. Do not compare that unqualified envelope directly with another maker's explicitly bare-dumbbell length. Ask for the particular measurement needed if clearance beside a bench or between storage supports is tight. Working room also extends beyond a stored product's dimensions.

Original-series grip and construction

The stated aluminum grip is 32 millimeters in diameter and 105 millimeters long. It is open between the end structures, which can be preferable for someone who finds a cage restrictive. Check that opening against the way you hold the weight. The newer S series specifies a longer 110-millimeter grip and a different connector and half-plate arrangement; a shared brand name does not make the two series identical.

The original construction uses both metal and engineered plastic parts. That should be understood as a mechanical adjustable system, rather than an all-metal fixed weight. Finish choices such as black and silver do not change the listed sixteen selections. Choosing the S series changes the specified components and grip opening as well as the available maximum.

Choose the complete pair or a verified conversion

The official original-series expansion kit explicitly converts a 550 pair into a complete 580, including additional weights and longer cradles. An owner following that stated route reaches the same named endpoint, so the conversion is an upgrade path rather than another supposedly different 80-pound model. Check that the existing pair belongs to the stated original series before buying the kit.

No current manufacturer-supported route beyond the original 580 ceiling is established by that kit. Do not treat the S-series expansion as a universal set of extra plates. The S 5100 is a separately specified 100-pound system. If 80 pounds is already insufficient, compare that complete model rather than assuming cross-series compatibility.

Selection speed does not remove the checks

The current manual specifically names the 580. Its locking tests and engagement checks remain part of ownership, including equal plate pickup and checking that the handle cannot turn outside the cradle. Do not force a selector or continue after damage or failed engagement. The maker prohibits dropping, slamming and using the dumbbells as bodyweight supports. A quick adjustment method is useful only when the required routine fits the session.

For capacity with a different handling approach, compare the 80-pound Pro 100 EXP knurled pair. The 90-pound Ironmaster Heavy Handle configuration offers manually loaded plates with a much higher installed starting weight. Those alternatives answer different needs rather than forming a simple quality ranking.

Choose the 580 for its supplied original-series 80-pound range and cradle-based changes. Confirm the storage layout, acceptable five-pound progression and retailer-specific warranty first. Select the S 5100 instead when a verified need above 80 pounds makes the larger supplied range useful.
