Model comparison
BowFlex Results Series 552, 1090, 52 and 90 compared
BowFlex lists four current Results Series SelectTech dumbbell pairs in the U.S. catalog: 552, 1090, 52 and 90. Two pairs share the 5–52.5-pound ladder; two share the 10–90-pound ladder. Their different silhouettes and stand fit mean that the numbers alone do not identify the package. This comparison uses the exact U.S. listings and their named SKUs, not a legacy 552 or 1090 sold before the newer Results series.
| U.S. model | SKU | Per-hand settings | Profile and listed length | Older Media Rack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Results 552 | ZMK4011008 | 5–52.5 lb; 15 settings | Curved/tapered; 16.9 in | Fits |
| Results 1090 | ZMK4011009 | 10–90 lb; 17 settings | Curved/tapered; 17.5 in | Fits |
| Results 52 | ZMK4011229 | 5–52.5 lb; 15 settings | Traditional uniform plates; 18.5 in | Does not fit |
| Results 90 | ZMK4011230 | 10–90 lb; 17 settings | Traditional uniform plates; 17.72 in | Does not fit |
The weight ladder is not just a maximum
The 552 and 52 publish the same 15 selections: 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 52.5 pounds. That provides several two-and-a-half-pound changes up to 25; most later changes are five pounds, with a last 2.5-pound move from 50 to 52.5. Neither is a complete half-step ladder.
The 1090 and 90 list 17 selections from 10 to 90 pounds, every five pounds. That is the useful choice if you require the upper capacity now, but it starts twice as heavy as the smaller models. The finder treats “heaviest load needed,” “lightest load acceptable” and “largest acceptable gap” as separate answers because each filters a different limitation.
Shape and stand fit break the ties
BowFlex calls the 552 and 1090 curved dumbbells with tapered plates. It describes the 52 and 90 as traditional dumbbell shapes with uniform plates. The four published lengths run from 16.9 inches for the 552 to 18.5 inches for the 52; width and height vary too, so check all dimensions and leave lifting clearance instead of comparing length alone.
Every exact product page names the newer BowFlex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbell Stand as a separate compatible option. If you already own the older SelectTech Stand with Media Rack, however, its manufacturer support page says it fits Results 552 and 1090 but not 52 or 90. Verify which stand you have before treating “BowFlex stand” as a single accessory identity.
Recall and manual identity need care
The current BowFlex notice covers older U.S. 552 and 1090 dumbbells and directs customers to Results Series models as replacement options. A legacy 552/1090 and a Results Series product can have similar names but are not interchangeable identities. Check the exact Results name and SKU on a new purchase; never use the current product recommendation to clear an uncertain used unit.
The accessible official global manuals are titled 552i, 1090i, SelectTech 52 and SelectTech 90. They have not been explicitly bridged to the four U.S. Results SKUs. Their listed settings or dimensions sometimes match the product pages, but their cover names differ and some operating passages contradict other pages or the U.S. listing. This guide therefore uses current U.S. product pages for identity, range and published envelope only; it does not turn global-guide text into a U.S. adjustment, locking or repair procedure. Keep the document supplied with the actual pair, and ask BowFlex for clarification where a safety instruction matters.
Make the shortlist from your real setup
Choose between the 552 and 52 by profile, length and older Media Rack compatibility; choose between the 1090 and 90 by the same practical differences at the 90-pound ceiling. If small starts or exact metric-native settings are essential, do not infer them from the range label. Compare documented alternatives such as a PowerBlock selector or REP QuickDraw pair when their actual supplied steps, handle clearance or verified instructions better match your needs. Read the buying guide before ordering a pair that is close on capacity but wrong for your room, stand or required setting.
