A useful fit for

A compact upgrade when 60 pounds is enough and normal adjustable selections can start at 25 pounds.

The main tradeoff

The kit reduces inside grip space to about 5.18 inches and requires tools to remove for the lighter original arrangement.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does this installed configuration reach 60 pounds while staying within 12 inches at full load?

Yes. It adds 15 lb internally to the original 45 lb pair and retains the stated 11.5-inch outside length.

Can the normal screw-equipped configuration start at 20 pounds or less?

No. Twenty pounds describes the handle without locking screws; the installed screw-equipped assembly starts at 25 lb.

Do matching external end loads provide every 2.5-pound step?

No. Those steps use the manufacturer's offset method; matching end loads give five-pound progression.

The Ironmaster 60-pound Heavy Handle configuration starts with the original 45-pound Quick-Lock pair and adds the Heavy Handle plate kit. It is a useful route for an existing owner who needs a modest capacity increase without lengthening the loaded dumbbells. The change also raises the starting weight and reduces the open grip space. Those consequences make it a different choice from simply buying the larger original plate package.

What the Heavy Handle kit actually changes

The kit contains four 7.5-pound plate assemblies and mounting hardware. Two assemblies clamp around the inside of each handle, adding 15 pounds per dumbbell. Ironmaster explicitly lists the original 45-pound system becoming a 60-pound system. That complete arrangement requires the original pair, plates and locking screws alongside the Heavy Handles; the accessory box alone is not a 60-pound dumbbell set.

The extra mass sits between the original backing plates. Consequently, the maker says the external dimensions do not increase. The original 45-pound set measures 11.5 inches long at full load, so this arrangement is appealing when length matters more than maintaining the lightest possible selections. It does not give the user the longer external plate inventory of the original 75-pound pair.

Twenty pounds is not the assembled plate-loading floor

The product headline describes a 20-pound starting handle. The Heavy Handle instructions make the distinction clear: the original bare handle weighs five pounds, the added plates raise it to 20, and including the two locking screws raises the assembled starting weight to 25 pounds. Use that 25-pound figure when planning the normal plate-loaded adjustment range.

A bare 20-pound handle and a screw-equipped 25-pound assembly are not the same operating setup. In particular, a shopper who needs a ten- or fifteen-pound selection between heavier sets should not assume those selections survive with the Heavy Handles fitted. Removing the kit means loosening its mounting bolts, rather than making an ordinary Quick-Lock weight change.

Grip room becomes part of the fit decision

Ironmaster gives approximately 5.18 inches of inside grip space after installation, compared with the original handle's 6.5-inch grip length. The handle remains exposed knurled metal, but the new plate assemblies occupy space beside the hand. Measure the room needed for your grip and any accessories rather than assuming that unchanged outside dimensions mean unchanged hand clearance.

The maker specifically says its older Fat Grip adapters do not fit this arrangement. Some shorter rubber accessories may fit, but that is not a compatibility promise for every adapter. A user who values the original long open handle may prefer additional outside plates, even if that makes the loaded dumbbell longer.

Installation and ordinary adjustments are separate tasks

The plate halves mount using the included bolts and six-millimeter Allen wrench. The instructions call for tightening them evenly and checking that the gaps remain even, instead of tightening one bolt fully before the others. Incorrect placement can let a plate assembly rotate or loosen. This installation deserves a careful initial check and periodic inspection; it is not a selector control to operate between sets.

Once installed, ordinary outside-plate changes use the original locking screws. Matching end loads provide five-pound changes from the screw-equipped floor through the 60-pound maximum. The original manual's 2.5-pound offset method remains a separate arrangement using one additional plate at one end and a corresponding grip adjustment. Choose the matching-end condition if symmetrical loading is essential.

Who should choose this compact upgrade

This configuration makes most sense when the 45-pound ceiling is too low, 60 pounds is enough, and nearly all planned work starts at 25 pounds or above. It is less suitable as the only pair for users with a wide spread of light and heavy exercises. The original 45-pound pair retains lighter assembled selections without unbolting accessories.

The original 75-pound system offers a higher ceiling and longer original grip clearance, with more exterior plates. The 90-pound Heavy Handle configuration combines that plate inventory with the same central-mass approach. Select among them by the minimum weight, maximum weight and hand space you will actually use, rather than treating each capacity number as a simple better-or-worse ranking.
